What are the child passenger safety seat requirements?

Buckle everyone! Children age 12 and under in back!

  • Children under the age of 8 years, shall be protected in an appropriate child restraint system. 
  • Infants birth to at least 1 year and 20 to 22 pounds should be in an infant seat only or rear-facing convertible. Seat position: rear-facing only.
  • Toddler/pre-school over 20 pounds and over 1 year, convertible, forward-facing. Seat position: forward-facing.
  • Young children over 40 pounds up to about 80 pounds or more, belt-positioning booster seat. Seat position: forward-facing.
  • Children 8 years of age or older but under age 16 should be in a restraint system or seat belts.
  • Children 8 years of age or older but under age of 18, seat belts.

Warning: do not place infants in the front seat of cars with airbags!
