Update on IEPA PFAS Notifications

Channahon E-News Posted on April 25, 2025

UPDATE:

The Village announced last Friday the 25th its intention to cease use of its wells containing PFAS. This was in response to notification from the IEPA that some PFAS levels exceeded the newly made drinking water standards. AS OF MONDAY APRIL 28TH, THOSE WELLS ARE NO LONGER BEING USED AS A SOURCE OF THE VILLAGE OF CHANNAHON'S DRINKING WATER.

The Village of Channahon has been monitoring Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) levels in the Village public water supply. On April 17, the Village received notice from the IEPA that the Illinois Pollution Control Board had adopted final regulations on maximum contaminant levels of regulated PFAS in water supplies, and the Village was made aware that it had exceeded those levels.

Since that time, we have been working on our options to achieve compliance with the new IEPA standards. As a result, the Village intends to cease using the wells in which contamination was detected as part of our water source. This change will become effective on Monday, April 28, 2025, at which point the Village’s water will meet the new IEPA standard for regulated PFAS.

The Village publishes results of its water testing annually each summer. Those reports are available on our website at www.channahon.org/waterreports (link).
