Ten Shared Principles

The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP) and the Illinois NAACP State Conference announced an affirmation of 10 Shared Principles that are designed to bridge the gap of mistrust between police and communities of color. The first of its kind in our nation's history, the March 22, 2018 agreement between the Illinois NAACP state conference and Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police identifies the common ground between local law enforcement and communities of colors in their commitment to having safe communities. 

The ILACP encouraged all police departments to adopt these principles as their own by signing the affirmation of shared principles. The Channahon Police Department adopted these principles on September 29, 2022 and adopted by resolution on October 17, 2022 by the Channahon Village Board of Trustees.

During the October 17, 2022 Board Meeting, Chief Shane Casey commented:

"I am very proud of this accomplishment.

This endeavor of this historic document began as a conversation back in 2016 between law enforcement leaders and communities of color, and eventually would become a first of its kind document between a law enforcement organization and a civil rights/social justice organization.

First, I'm extremely pleased with staff for being a part of this moment in the police department's history. Police department members have completed initial training on these principles, and it is my hope to continue expounding on this training each year. The professionalism of our agency often has us saying, 'Finally legislation is catching up to how we do business.' The same is true with these Principles. These concepts are not new to us, and embody many of our espoused values. Such as the preservation of life; treating people with fairness, dignity and respect; building trust with our community through community policing, transparency, and impartial enforcement of law and ordinance; diversity in our workforce; and de-escalation of volatile situations to name a few. We recognize there is more to be done, and will work with the Illinois Chiefs and the NAACP to dive deeper into each of these principles in the future."
