Overview

On March 4, 2024, the Channahon Village Board unanimously voted to establish the Channahon Arts & Culture Commission in furtherance of promoting cultural and artistic programs that will enrich and enhance the quality of life in Channahon and the region. The five-member commission will be responsible for developing community cultural and arts policies, programs, and events and to research and develop funding sources through donations and other grants that may be utilized for the creation and expansion of these programs.

EVENTS & CELEBRATIONS

100th Anniversary Celebration of Route 66

Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Route 66 with the Channahon Arts & Culture Commission. Channahon and other Route 66 communities, From Hodgkins to Pontiac, IL, have joined together for the 100-year road trip. While traveling the first hundred miles, plan to stop and see the 36 custom car benches.

The custom car benches for the 100-year road trip were funded by a grant specifically intended to support tourism for the 100th anniversary of Route 66. The Channahon Arts and Culture Commission will receive two benches. The first bench resides at the Manor Motel, located by Route 66/I-55 and US Route 6. The original Route 66 bypassed Channahon but in the 1940s, it was rerouted to bring travellers down what is modern-day I-55. The Manor Motel's original owner, Walt Anderson, built the motel to accommodate the new influx of visitors to the area. In addition to the motel's construction, Anderson built a restaurant, liquor store and a Sinclair gas station previously located across Route 6. The Manor Motel is still open to travelers of historic Route 66.

The second bench will be located off Historic Route 6 at the Gateway which is adjacent to the I & M Canal State Trail. The site has 27 parking spots, a bike rack, bike repair facilities and a drinking fountain/bottle filling station.
